FMCSA Pre-Employment Drug Testing Requirements
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations require CDL drivers to complete a DOT pre-employment drug test with a negative result before performing safety-sensitive duties.
A new pre-employment drug test may not be required if the employer can verify that the driver:
- Participated in a DOT-compliant drug and alcohol testing program within the previous 30 days, and
- Either:
- Was drug tested within the previous 6 months, or
- Participated continuously in a DOT random testing program for the previous 12 months.
Our consortium management service helps employers verify driver eligibility, maintain compliant testing records, and determine when a new pre-employment test is required.

Consortium enrollment fees cover program administration only.
Drug and alcohol testing is billed separately for each occurrence based on test type and collection requirements under U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.
